The Snowmakers Had a Busy Weekend!

Posted by: Linda Derosier - 11/07/2011 12:58 PM (Winter Fun)

While you rested, played, and went to ski movies over the weekend, our snowmakers have been piling it up on Stewart and Surprise Slopes.  Their goal will be to have Stewart & Surprise ready to go for the tentative opening day: Friday, November 25th.

I heard through the grape vine that you allow people with passes to hike up before the lift opens any given morning. Is this true or just a rumor?

Yes, Timmy said we will have a few features set up on opening weekend.

I don't understand. Does that mean we *can* hike up before the season is started or before the lifts open any given day during the season?

Jason, During the season, once the whole hill is open you can skin -(not hike) up the hill. You will need to check in at the Nevada Gulch Lodge entrance. You will find a box out side the front door that you can register at. You must provide a cell phone number and be off the hill no later than 9:00 AM. Another comment had been posted asking if there would be any features set up the first weekend, and I had accidently deleted that post so it is not showing. But I responded for Timmy.

Thanks for the clarification, and I hate to be a pain, but what do you mean by skin? I am not trying to be wise guy, I really don't get what you mean. Did you mean ski like cross country ski up the hill? Or is that a technique with which I am unfamiliar? Are snowshoes ok? I am a snowboarder and have a great pair of snowshoes and a back pack that can carry a board. Thanks, and I am really looking forward to opening weekend!

Hi Jason, Skinning up is done on telemark skis. They put a "skin" on the bottom of their skis so they can walk up the hill with their skis on. I checked with the Ski PAtrol Director and yes, you can snowshoe up and ride down. PS Please note that we will not be open on the 25th, our opening weekend ins now scheduled for December 3rd & 4th.

Linda, thanks for the great reply. I learned something new (skinning), which is rare for me. It is too bad the hills have not gotten more snow. I am sure it will be a great season nonetheless, just starting a week later. Look at the awesome season last year, and it started late too!
